NCRB: POCSO cases increased by 30.8% in last five years

The latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report shows that from 2020 to 2021, there was a 16.2% increase in crimes against children in India.

The detention of an influential and powerful seer of Karnataka after days of dilly dallying by the local police on charges off assaulting two minor girls highlights the  grim reality of crimes against children. 

The latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report shows that from 2020 to 2021, there was a 16.2% increase in crimes against children in India.

A total of 19,055 cases of crime against children were registered in 2021, showing an increase in registration by 26.7% over 2020 (15,043 cases). 

Crime heads reported majority of cases under “Crimes Against Children” were kidnapping and abduction (56.6%) followed by Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 (30.8%).

In 2021 - 53,874 POCSO cases were recorded across the country, Uttar Pradesh (7,129) reported highest number of POCSO related cases followed by Maharashtra (6,200) and Kerala (6,070) cases. 

47,221 POCSO cases were reported in 2020, 47,335 such cases were reported in 2019.

Sikkim, with a rate of 48.6%, has the highest percentage of sexual offences against children, followed by Kerala with 28.1%, Meghalaya with 27.8%, Haryana with 24. 7%, and Mizoram 24.6%.

Of the 6,337 POCSO cases that occurred in Rajasthan- 18 girls were under the age of six, 64 were under the age of 12, 442  under the age of 18 were victims of the crime. 

In contrast to the 1,28,531 cases reported the year before, the country reported 1,49,404 cases of crime against minors last year across all states and Union Territories. 

The most instances of crime against minors were reported in Madhya Pradesh (19,173), followed by Maharashtra (17,261) and Uttar Pradesh (16,838). 

Delhi topped the list of Union Territories for child abuse complaints with 7,118.
