In a normal situation, the media should not be bothered about the frequent overseas visits of Rahul Gandhi. But fairly or unfairly, his overseas sojourns have become a topic of discussion and debate in the media
Why analysts, even the average Indian voter seems to think that Rahul Gandhi takes too many foreign trips. C Voter-India Tracker conducted a nationwide survey to ask people about their opinion on the issue. Overall, 61% of the respondents felt that Rahul Gandhi takes too many foreign vacations as shown in the accompanying chart. There was no significant difference in the responses between genders or between urban and rural voters; though rural voters seemed more sympathetic towards Rahul Gandhi. There was the usual polarisation along political and ideological lines. While less than a majority of 49% of opposition voters were of the opinion that Rahul Gandhi takes too many foreign vacations, an overwhelming 79% of NDA supporters shared the same sentiment. There was a big difference between age groups to. In the 18 to 24 age group, just about 50% of the respondents felt that Rahul Gandhi takes too many foreign vacations. The proportion jumped to more than 73% for Indians in the age group 55 and above.
As stated earlier, this issue is actually a non issue and should not get widespread coverage in the media. But then, Rahul Gandhi is no ordinary citizens and loyal Congress supporters and many “liberal” media professionals hope that Rahul Gandhi will become Prime Minister of India some day. So it is natural for the media and the vote to follow his words and his activities-including vacations. Unfortunately for him, data reveals that he has so far been a failure as a politician whose primary role in a democracy is to win elections to able able to implement your agenda and vision. In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi led his party from the front and yet the Congress was reduced to a pathetic 44 out of 543 seats. There were hopes that the tables will turn in 2019. But the Congress under party president Rahul Gandhi won 52 seats; more than 20 of them coming from Kerala and Tamil Nadu as a onetime windfall. Rahul Gandhi lost his traditional family bastion Amethi to BJP
leader Smriti Irani.
