The net reaction to Trump tariffs on India’s diplomatic relations with the country is also negative

With an additional 25% tariff on Indian exports to the US, India is now facing one of the highest American tariffs in the world. Most Indians worry that these tariffs could negatively impact India’s agricultural industry the most, based on a CVoter survey conducted on 1st of August this year.

The survey was conducted over 1,200 respondents across the country over a Computer Assisted Telephonic Interview (CATI). When asked "In your opinion, which Indian industry will be most affected by this move of the Trump government?" to which about 26.5% respondents picked ‘agricultural industry’.

Nearly 13.2% respondents said that it would impact India’s textile industry the most. Only about 11% of respondents said that it would impact no industry at all. The respondents were least likely to think that the tariffs could harm India’s Information and Technology industry (IT) as only 6% picked that option.

The survey also asked whether Trump’s tariffs would have an impact on India’s economy. When asked ‘What impact do you think this move by the Trump government will have on India's economy overall?’, the popular opinion was ‘it will have no impact at all’ - opted by more than one-third of the surveyed respondents.

However, the larger picture remains negative - with some differences in the intensity at which the tariffs could impact. The survey shows that nearly 35% of ‘opposition voters’ felt that the impact of Trump tariffs would bear a ‘very poor’ impact and another 30% said it would have a somewhat negative impact.

Among those who voted for the NDA alliance in the 2024 elections, about 41% said the tariff won’t impact India’s economy at all, only 18.6% of them think it would have a ‘very poor’ impact and about 30% feel it will have a ‘somewhat poor’ impact.

The net reaction to Trump tariffs on India’s diplomatic relations with the country is also negative.

When asked - "In your opinion, how will this step of the Trump government affect the relationship between India and America?" - Nearly 36% respondents said it’d be a ‘very poor’ impact, another 25% said it would have a somewhat poor impact and only 22% respondents said it would have no impact at all. Less than 10% of respondents believed in a positive impact.
