While the Israel-Iran conflict does raise worries over India’s energy security, most Indians feel that it is less likely that it could turn into a nuclear war.

A large majority of Indians worry that the Israel-Iran conflict could threaten India’s energy security, reveals a CVoter foundation’s survey conducted last week.

According to the survey of over 1200 Indians contacted via a Computer Assisted Telephonic Interview, nearly 46% Indians believe that the conflict has the potential to disrupt India’s energy security. The Strait of Hormuz -  a narrow point of entry to the gulf of Persia where more than half of India’s crude oil passes from, is crucial for India’s oil needs. Any disruption in the gulf could endanger India’s oil supply.

A cross-tab analysis of the voting preference of the respondents (based on the party they voted in the latest elections) shows that while the fear persists among all voting groups, opposition voters are more likely to perceive the negative outcome than those who support the NDA alliance.

When asked “Are you worried that the Iran-Israel war could impact India's energy security?” - about 53% of the opposition voters said yes, only 40.6% of theNDA supporters said so. The national average was around 46%.

While the Israel-Iran conflict does raise worries over India’s energy security, most Indians feel that it is less likely that it could turn into a nuclear war.

When asked “Do you think there is a possibility that the Israel-Iran war could turn into a nuclear conflict?”, nearly about 33% of the respondents said - not at all. There were about 29% respondents who said that up to a great extent - it is possible, most of which were opposition voters (who also support Iran personally) 35%. About 38% NDA supporters and 35% other parties’ supporters believed the might not go nuclear at all.
