Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray is facing what seems to be his biggest political crisis. Senior sena man Eknath Shinde is camping in a Gujarat's Surat with more than 20 other party MLAs. This development has fuelled speculation of a rebellion within the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra.
The crisis emerged after the results of the MLC polls were announced late Monday night. The BJP won all the five seats it had contested with Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party bagging two each. Around 20 MLAs are suspected to have cross-voted.
The move has put a question mark on the future of Maharashtra’s ruling alliance by the Shiv Sena (whose leader Uddhav Thackeray is the chief minister) and also comprising the NCP and the Congress. Eknath Shinde, of all the leaders plunging the ruling alliance in the state into a political crisis is seen as a massive embarrassment to Uddhav Thackeray.
C Voter-India Tracker conducted a nationwide survey to gauge public opinion on the issue. The survey indicates that 69% of Indians believe that Uddhav Thackeray’s hold over Shiv Sena is getting weak. Interestingly, both the opposition as well as NDA voters share the same sentiment. Close to 75% of NDA supporters felt that he is unable to hold his flock together, while 64% of opposition voters shared the same sentiment.
On the other hand, 36% of opposition voters felt that Thackeray is as strong as he was before, while only 24% of NDA voters felt the same. Overall only 30% believed in Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership. If we go through this survey, it seems clear that Thackeray has to sweat a lot to make things turn to his side.
