Maharashtra is the seventh state Congress has lost to BJP since 2014

The end of MVA alliance also indicates a deeper worry for the Congress party. Maharashtra is the seventh state or union territory that the grand old party has lost despite being in power or was in position to form a government after Narendra Modi become prime minister in 2014, thanks to BJP's political maneuvering.

BJP's first taste of success of overthrowing a Congress government was in 2016 when the saffron party swept in power in Arunachal Pradesh. In the 2014 assembly polls, Congress got a majority winning 42 out of 60 seats, while the BJP had managed to win only 11. Two year later, incumbent CM Pema Khandu along with 40 other Congress MLAs come out of the party, joined People's Party of Arunachal only to merge with BJP later in the year.

In 2018, Karnataka saw a MVA-like alliance where JD(S) and Congress managed to keep BJP, the single largest party in the state out of power. However, Congress could enjoy power only for a year when BJP managed to wean away 16 lawmakers, leading to the fall of HD Kumaraswamy government.

Madhya Pradesh was the third state where Congress was ousted from the power. It had managed to end 15-year-rule of Shivraj Singh Chouhan by forming a government in 2018 with the support of 121 MLAs. Only 15 months later, 26 MLAs swung to the saffron party after BJP managed to swing Scindia to its side. Subsequently, the Kamalnath govt failed to muster majority vote and fell.

The BJP then turned to Puducherry where it manage to hit the ruling Congress coalition by the resignation of six of its MLAs, including one from the DMK. The incumbent V. Narayanasamy resigned on the day of the trust vote.

Manipur and Goa was a different story, where Congress despite being the single largest party could not even form the government. In both the states, BJP managed to stich in alliance with regional parties in the nick of time, managing to keep the grand old party out of power.

In states like Bihar, where Congress was a junior partner in " Mahagathbandhan" saw a turnaround in 2017 when CM Nitish Kumar joined hands with the BJP leaving the Congress and RJD out of the picture. What was an anti-BJP government became an NDA government.

As of today, Congress remains in power only in four states - Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan where it enjoys majority and Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu where it is a junior partner to the incumbent JMM and DMK governments respectively.
