The plan was extended to include an additional 2 crore homes, with a total outlay of ₹3,06,137 crore for FY 2024-29 and ₹54,500 crore for FY 2024-25.

The Ministry of Rural Development celebrated the Awaas Diwas 2024, the 8th anniversary of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) on November 20, 2024. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 20, 2016 in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, aiming to provide housing for the poorest segments of society. The beneficiaries are selected through a rigorous three-stage validation procedure that involves Gram Sabha clearances, geotagging, and the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC 2011) and Awaas+ (2018) surveys. This guarantees that the most deserving people receive aid.

For effective funds distribution, the program has also integrated Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and IT. Additionally, it has used evidence-based monitoring using geotagged pictures at different stages of construction and region-specific house designs. The plan was extended to include an additional 2 crore homes, with a total outlay of ₹3,06,137 crore for FY 2024-29 and ₹54,500 crore for FY 2024-25. The original goal was to finish 2.95 crore homes by 2023-24.

The government has set an ambitious goal to build 3.32 crore homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-G. Millions of rural families now enjoy far better living conditions due to the 3.21 crore approved and 2.67 crore constructed homes as of November 19, 2024. With 74 percent of approved homes owned by women either alone or in partnership, the program has also given special attention to women empowerment. The scheme now aspires to provide 100 percent ownership to women. Skilled employment has also been a priority, with  almost 3 lakh rural masons trained in disaster-resilient construction, boosting their employability.

It is anticipated that over ten crore people will benefit from the development of homes for two crore additional households. The approval would facilitate the building of safe and secure houses of good quality with all the basic amenities for all people without housing and people living in dilapidated and kutcha houses.

Through its convergence with programs such as MGNREGA (Eligible households can avail 95 days of employment as unskilled labour, specifically under Rural Mason Training, with a daily wage of ₹90.95), SBM-G (Beneficiaries receive up to ₹12,000 to construct toilets, ensuring better sanitation facilities in rural homes), Jal Jeevan Mission, and Surya Ghar, PMAY-G guarantees that recipients have access to solar energy, LPG, water, toilets, and power. In the last ten years, 2.88 lakh dwellings and land have been provided to landless recipients, who receive special attention.

With 59.58 lakh SC and 58.57 lakh ST homes finished, the program sets aside at least 60 percent of its goals for SC and ST households. Another 5 percent of the goal is allocated to housing for families impacted by natural disasters, including the Fani Cyclone in Odisha, and another 5 percent is set aside for individuals with disabilities.

The DharatiAaba Tribal Village Utkarsh Abhiyan, which focuses on tribal development and covers 63,843 villages, is another important project for achieving the goal of "Housing for All." It benefits over 5 crore tribal people in 30 States and UTs.

In September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually distributed sanction letters to 32,000 beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) and released the first instalment of ₹32 crore for the construction of houses. Additionally, he virtually gave keys to 46,000 PMAY-G recipients nationwide.
