In the latest NCRB (National Crime Report Bureau) report - India recorded 76 sedition cases across the country in 2021, an increase from 73 cases registered in 2020.
In response to a complaint from BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, the Delhi Police on September 3, filed a Zero FIR against Manjunath Bhajantri, the deputy commissioner of Deoghar, and charged him with sedition and other offences.
Earlier this week, a dispute erupted over a FIR filed against Dubey and nine other people, including MP Manoj Tiwari, for allegedly breaking into Deoghar's air traffic control room and pressuring officials to clear their chartered aeroplane, reported Hindustan Times.
In accordance with the rule, the number of instances reported nationwide each year has increased by more than 55%, from 47 in 2014 to 73 in 2020.
Section 124A of IPC is described as “whoever, by words, either spoken or written, or by signs, or by visible representation, or otherwise, brings or attempts to bring into hatred or contempt, or excites or attempts to excite disaffection towards, the Government established by law shall be punished with imprisonment for life, to which fine may be added”

As per the NCRB report - in 2017 - 51 sedition cases were registered, 70 cases in 2018, 93 sedition cases in 2019, a total of 363 cases of sedition, as defined by Section 124A of the IPC, were registered.

The most sedition cases were reported by Andhra Pradesh, which had 29 of the 76 total cases in 2021. The increase in Andhra Pradesh contrasts sharply with 2020, when the state had no sedition cases reported.
Meanwhile, states that did not report even a single instance of sedition cases were Meghalaya, Mizoram, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, and Puducherry
Based on statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau - Assam had the most sedition cases filed between 2014 and 2021.With 42 concerning these issues in the previous eight years, Haryana came in second place to Assam. Haryana was followed by Jharkhand and Karnataka, with 40 and 38 cases, respectively, India Express reported.
