For the Current session 2022-23, 5,932 applications have come through ICCR. Out of them, 1,029 applicants were initially chosen and 171 got admitted. Delhi University has received 1,141 applications for self-financing and other scholarship applicants, compared to 1800 last year. Only 323 admissions have been verified, and the process has not yet been completed.
The number of foreign students at Delhi University will be lower this year as about 200 to 250 students may decrease as compared to last year. According to officials, 323 foreign students have taken admission so far, and it is believed that by the end of the admission process, this number will reach 400. Last year, more than 600 foreign nationals took admission at Delhi University.
If we talk about the admission process for foreign nationals, then it usually takes place in two ways: through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations or through self-financing and other scholarships. There is an unexpected drop in the admission figures both ways.
Interestingly, 7,442 foreigners applied to Delhi University through ICCR for the 2021–22 academic year. 1,994 of them received the offer letter, and 281 of them ultimately received admission. A total of 871 of the 1,800 self-funded applicants received an offer letter, and 347 were ultimately admitted into UG/PG and PhD programmes. If we exclude this year, the number of foreign students has been increasing for the last few years. According to the 2020 AISHE report of the Ministry of Education the total number of foreign national students enrolled in India is 49,348. The foreign students come from 168 different countries from all across the globe. The highest share of foreign students comes from the neighboring countries of which Nepal contributes 28.1% of the total, followed by Afghanistan 9.1%, Bangladesh 4.6% and Bhutan 3.8%. Apart from this Sudan (3.6%), the U.S. (3.3%), Nigeria (3.1%), Yemen (2.9%), Malaysia (2.7%), and the United Arab Emirates (2.7%) are among the top 10 countries from where the highest numbers of students prefer Delhi University for their further education. Except the U.S and Malaysia, the numbers of male students coming from these top 10 countries were higher than the number of female students. The highest numbers of foreign students are enrolled in Undergraduate courses, that is, 74.3% of the total foreign students, followed by Post Graduate with about 16.6% enrolment. Enrolment in the rest of the levels constitutes 9.1%. Foreign male students are higher in almost all the levels.
According to experts, the Russia-Ukraine crisis is a major reason for the decline in the admission of foreign students. Due to this crisis, the economic condition of the people has become weak, and people want to save money. The crisis of economic recession and inflation is going on in various countries. That is why there has been a decrease in the trend of studying abroad, not only in India but in the whole world.
Apart from this, if we talk about the lack of admission of foreign students, especially in Delhi University, then another big reason for this is also the increase in fees.
In comparison to the previous session, this year the fee has been increased by around Rs 20,000 for undergraduate courses, while the fee for MBA courses has increased by around Rs 30,000. Along with this, the fee hike of Rs 15,000 in postgraduate courses is also applicable from this session.
