The recorded crime rate per 1,00,000 people decreased from 445.9 in 2021 to 422.2 in 2022. The number of cases registered under the IPC and SLL Crimes in 2022 has decreased compared to 2021 by 2.8 percent and 7.0 percent, respectively.
The National Crime Records Bureau has recently released its annual report titled, ‘Crime in India 2022.’ According to the report, In 2022, a total of 58,24,946 cognizable crimes were registered, consisting of 35,61,379 crimes under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 22,63,567 crimes under Special & Local Laws (SLL). It reveals a 2,71,364 (4.5 percent) decrease in case registrations compared to 2021 (60,96,310 cases). The recorded crime rate per 1,00,000 people decreased from 445.9 in 2021 to 422.2 in 2022. The number of cases registered under the IPC and SLL Crimes in 2022 has decreased compared to 2021 by 2.8 percent and 7.0 percent, respectively. Percentage share of IPC was 61.1 percent while percentage share of SLL cases was 38.9 percent of total cognizable crimes during 2022.
A total of 11,58,815 cases of offences affecting the human body were registered which accounted for 32.5 percent of total IPC crimes during 2022, out of which hurt (6,27,676 cases) accounted for maximum cases i.e. 54.2 percent, followed by cases of causing death by negligence (1,59,096 cases, 13.7 percent) and cases of Kidnapping & Abduction (1,07,588 cases, 9.3 percent).
As compared to the year 2021, there was a decline in the cases of murder in 2022. A total of 28,522 cases of murder were registered during 2022, showing a marginal decline of 2.6 percent over 2021 (29,272 cases). 'Disputes' with 9,962 cases was the motive in highest number of murder cases in 2022 followed by 'personal vendetta or enmity' in 3,761 cases and 'gain' in 1,884 cases, said the data in the annual crime report of the National Crime Records Bureau.

Uttar Pradesh topped the chart with highest number of cases of murder registered in 2022. The northern state recorded 3,491 cases of murder followed by Bihar (2,930), Maharashtra (2,295), Madhya Pradesh (1,978) and Rajasthan (1,834), with the top five states together accounting for 43.92 percent of murder cases in the country.
According to the most recent National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) annual report, there was a startling 4 percent increase in crimes against women in India in 2022. This covers instances of rape, assault, kidnapping, and cruelty committed by spouses or other family members. According to the NCRB data, the number of offences against women that are registered has significantly increased, rising from 3,71,503 in 2020 to 4,45,256 in 2022. In contrast to the 4,28,278 instances reported in 2021, the 2022 numbers indicated a concerning rise.

According to the report, 'Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives' (31.4 percent), 'Kidnapping and Abduction of Women' (19.2 percent), 'Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty' (18.7 percent), and 'Rape' (7.1 percent) accounted for a sizable number of crimes against women under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). In 2022, there were 66.4 crimes committed per lakh women, up from 64.5 in 2021.
The Dowry Prohibition Act was notable in that 13,479 cases were registered nationwide, and more than 1,40,000 of those cases were classified as "Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives" (Sec. 498 A IPC).
The report revealed a rise in crimes against minors, senior persons, Scheduled Castes (SC), and Scheduled Tribes (ST) by 8.7 percent, 9.3 percent, 13.1 percent, and 14.3 percent, respectively, extending beyond crimes against women. In addition, there was a 10.5 percent increase in corruption, an 11.1 percent rise in economic offences, and a 24 percent increase in cybercrimes in 2022.
Furthermore, alarming patterns were noted in big cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi. 14,158 crimes against women were reported in Delhi; 6,176 instances with a high Chargesheet rate of 80.6 percent were reported in Mumbai; and 3,924 cases with a Chargesheet rate of 74.2 percent were reported in Bengaluru.
With various Chargesheet rates, Uttar Pradesh led the state with 65,743 cases of crimes against women under the IPC and Special and Local Laws (SLL), followed by Maharashtra with 45,331 cases and Rajasthan with 45,058 cases.
