NCRB data 2021: 15.3% increase in crime against women in 2021

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in its latest data stated that there were 4,28,278 cases of crime against women in 2021 compared to 3,71,503 cases in 2020, a 15.3% increase.

Crime Against Women

'Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives' (31.8%), 'Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty' (20.8%), 'Kidnapping & Abduction of Women' (17.6%), and 'Rape' (7.4%) accounted for the majority of cases under the IPC's definition of crimes against women. 

31,677 rape crimes in total were reported in 2021. The state with the most rapes (as defined by Section 376 of the IPC) was Rajasthan - 6,337, Madhya Pradesh reported 2,947 came in last, and Uttar Pradesh at 2,845 was third-worst.

In comparison to 2020, when it was 56.5, the crime rate per lakh women was 64.5 in 2021.

Rajasthan, Odisha, Haryana, Telangana, and Assam are the next states in line. 

With 56,083 instances actually registered in 2021, Uttar Pradesh leads all other states in terms of the total number of cases. Rajasthan, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Odisha are the other states with the greatest number of crimes against women reported.

For the fifth year in a row, Assam has the highest rate of crime against women in India.

NCRB figure shows Delhi was the most dangerous metropolitan area for women in the nation last year, with two underage girls being sexually assaulted every day. In 2021, Delhi registered 13,892 cases of crimes against women, up significantly from 2020's total of 9,782 cases.

Dowry Cases

NCRB data shows that 13,534 instances were reported in the country last year under the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961, a 25% increase from the cases registered in 2020 (10,046). 

The biggest number of these instances nationwide—up to 4,594—were reported in Uttar Pradesh. However, there was a minor decrease in dowry-related deaths in 2021, with a total of 6,753 instances documented, compared to 6,843 cases in 2020. 

Crime Against Children

A total of 1,49,404 cases of crime against children were reported in 2021, up 16.2% over the previous year (1,28,531 cases). 

Kidnapping and abduction (45.0%) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, 2012 (38.1%), which includes child rape, were the two largest crime heads under "Crime Against Children" in 2020. In 2021, there were 33.6 crimes reported per 1 lakh children, up from 28.9 in 2020.

Death by Suicide

There were 1,64,033 suicide deaths in India in total in 2021, a rise of 7.2% from 2020. NCRB  data from police-recorded suicide cases, further states that more than 100,000 people in the nation die by suicide each year.

Maharashtra reported the highest number of suicides among all the states.
